Richard II and the Tarot Reader

Richard II and the Tarot Reader

The date is September 1394. Richard's wife Queen Anne has recently died and he is mourning his loss. He is worried about the future and goes to a tarot reader to shed some light on what he should do next.

The Facts

Richard was a fan of mythology and fortune telling. He did insist that people call him Royal or High Majesty. He was infamous for bringing in the poll tax and the subsequent revolts that this created.  He did hide in the Wardrobe (which was a building not a piece of furniture) and Tyler was accidently stabbed.

He was known for carrying pieces of linen which we would recognise as an early handkerchief. Chaucer worked in his court and became known for his Canterbury Tales. He truely loved his wife Anne and really did swear an oath to not set foot in any building where he had spent time with her. He didn't get on with his Uncle John of Gaunt. He really did dig his friend De Vere up and brought his body back to England. Dick Whittington also appears at this time but no sign of a cat.

He really did have his eye on 7 year old Isabella for his wife and he did have Sheen Manor destroyed. He really was put in prison and then killed so he really should have paid attention shouldn't he?
