Katherine Parr and the Tutor

Katherine Parr and the Tutor

The date is August 1543.
Katherine is newly married to King Henry VIII and decides to oversee her stepchildren’s education so decides to appoint a tutor.

The Facts

It's true that Katherine appointed the tutors to her youngest step children. Richard Featherstone, the catholic tutor really was executed.

She did want PE, music and modern languages to be part of their curriculum. She really was learning latin herself and the library was as described! She was a great learner throughout her life and encouraged Elizabeth to be the same. She was named after Catherine Aragon. She was married twice before she married Henry. She was indeed step mother to her second husband's two children - she got on well with Margaret, not so well with John.

She was instrumental in bringing Henry's children together and giving them a Mother figure for once. She was the only Queen to incorporate her name into her signature (image 3). She was undertaking a translation of Erasmus and had her own books which she treasured (and were as described). She did encourage people to put their name to things and she did write a book called Lamentations of a Sinner.
