Jane Seymour and the Obstetrician

Jane Seymour and the Obstetrician

The date is May 1537. King Henry VIII wants a son and heir.
Newly married, Jane has found out that she is pregnant and wants to make sure she does everything she can to bring the baby safely into this world.

The Facts

It's true that her parents had ten children and were known for their fertility. She really did have a terror of illness and her story of feeling left on the shelf as a spinster is true. She really was worried that having children (whilst what Henry wanted) did end up making his previous wives old and likely to be cheated on. Anne really did find Jane sitting on his lap.

She was Anne's lady in waiting and would have known if the stories of Anne's infidelity were true but she never spoke up in her defence. Why would she?! He proposed marriage 24 hours after Anne was beheaded.

She did worry that she would never get pregnant. She really did have cravings for quails and cucumbers. And the story about asking for fat quails is true. She was an expert horsewoman and loved gardening. Child bed fever was a real concern for all tudor women and it was what we believe Jane died from shortly after Edward's birth.
