George IV and the Marriage Guidance Counsellor

George IV and the Marriage Guidance Counsellor

The date is July 1821. George has just held his Coronation. The relationship with his wife, now Queen, Caroline has been in decline for over 20 years. As a last ditch attempt, he goes to see a marriage guidance counsellor.

The Facts

George was somewhat overweight at this point and he did indeed have a high collared jacket and neck cloth to conceal a double chin. He also hated the wig powder tax so wore his natural hair. All the ladies mentioned are real as is their stories. He really did appear to have a type! He did have a form of marriage ceremony with Maria and all the blackmail attempts are true. Did he not learn?!

Eye miniatures are real, believe it or not. The quote from him about his supposed daughter is verbatim. He did spend most of his Coronation winking. WINKING. There was no love lost between him and Caroline. And when they met he did ask for a large brandy. She was indeed separated from her only child and he didn't tell her she'd died. The quote from Jane Austen is verbatim and he was actually a fan of her writing as stated. He really did slam the door of the Abbey shut in Caroline's face. The reference to the poison in her milk of magnesia is a common thought that he was trying to kill her.
