Edward VIII and the Retirement Home

The date is February 1952. Edward's brother King George VI has died and he returns to England to attend the funeral. While he's there, he takes the opportunity to make plans for his retirement.

The Facts

Edward did return to the UK for his Brother's funeral. His name does contain the four patron saints of the UK - how's that for patriotism? He really didn't enjoy administration or punctuality. All the locations mentioned are places that he actually lived and how he experienced them. He really did suggest giving German prisoners loads of wine to loosen their tongues.

He didn't leave home until he was 25 and did want to turn Buckingham Palace into offices. He did try and sell off Sandringham and Balmoral. The story about the gramophone records is true. He did play the bagpipes to annoy people. The story about Follow My Leader is true as is the one about being caught sliding down a drainpipe in Kenya.

He did like Old Fashioned cocktails and the stories about Munich and Oxford is true. He did emerge from a train wreck with a cocktail shaker. The story about the postage stamp on the rhino is true. As is the toilet roll holder that plays God Save The King. Wallis' jewels were stolen when visiting Berkshire.
