The date is March 1528. Cardinal Wolsey has been tasked by Henry VIII to get his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled.
If his plans don’t work, he’ll be out of a job. He needs to look at his career options so decides to visit a coach.
The Facts
It's true that Wolsey got his divinity degree before 15. He was indeed removed from his post at Oxford University for misallocation of funds. Its true that he seemed to get a lot of his jobs when the previous incumbant died. But each time, he managed to get nominated for a new role.
He did become Royal Chaplain to Henry VII and did hold several positions at the same time with permission to be absent from them! He did indeed become Royal Almoner to Henry VIII and kept collecting all the positions mentioned!
It's true that he did break canon law by not remaining celibate. And he did break protocol by skipping stages instead of going through the proper channels. He really did want to be pope one day and therefore became Cardinal so he could vote. He really did wear red (images below) and the story of the hat is true. He was indeed head of the judicial process without any kind of law training. And its true that he was Archbishop of York and only visited once in 15 years.
The story about the musician hiding books under his bed is true. As is the story of his daily commute and the hat getting its own staff member. It's true that he was allowed to ignore the abstinence and fasting rules. His plan was indeed to bring Catherine and Henry to trial and find that they had been living in sin. He really did want the power to relax, limit and moderate divine law.
